The big surprise is that Firmino, LFC’s 2nd highest scorer in Europe, is on the bench. The second surprise is that Matip starts in place of Gomez who is also on the bench. Lallana comes in for Fabinho too who didn’t have a great game on Saturday. Sturridge comes in for Firmino too.
Kieta returns from his ‘international’ injury to make the bench too alongside Origi, Moreno and the three who dropped to the bench from Saturdays line-up.
Still a strong line-up and bench. With Firmino coming off against Arsenal, I did think that was in part to keep him for tonight – maybe had a knock too. I know he hasn’t been at his ‘best’ or scored a lot (only 4 so far and 1 in his last 9) but he always works hard for the whole team. He is just as likely to be winning the ball back in midfield or on the edge of our box as he is pressing, harassing and tackling defenders to start another attack for us.
Matip hasn’t had much game time so not sure why he is in instead of Gomez who has outshone VVD at times – not that VVD has been poor either but that Gomez has been great. I do think Lallana needs to start showing the form he had before injury but with Kieta, Hendo, Shaqiri likely to be available at the weekend, he needs to start impressing on the pitch to even make the bench. Hopefully this can kickstart his season and maybe even save his LFC career – we could also have Ox back come the summer transfer window and Lallana could well be surplus if he doesn’t start showing the form he had…
