Just came across this comment online: “What a difference Wijnaldum has on the Liverpool team. When he was injured Liverpool lost the runners in behind the opposition defence and lost midfielders driving with the ball. Underrated!” It is so true! I have always been a big Wijnaldum fan!
I can’t say I am a ‘big’ fan of Gini but I do think he is often overlooked and under-rated for the work he does. He doesn’t score enough for me to be a ‘big’ fan and in some ways he is ‘similar’ to Hendo in that he does a lot of work, doesn’t score enough for a midfielder and only gets recognition when they are ‘missed’. By that, I mean whilst they are playing, they are almost anonymous, but as soon as they are missing, its apparent that the work they do is not replaced by the person who is playing.
With the options we do have in Midfield, I do think Gini should be the first name on the team sheet right now and I think Klopp agrees. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has accumulated the most minutes played for our midfield and I think that contributed to our defensive record because he was breaking up attacks before they got to VVD, Gomez etc…
