Liverpool sign Virgil van Dijk in world-record deal

The 26-year-old Dutchman will join Liverpool on 1st January when the transfer window re-opens, and will become the most expensive signing in the club’s history. The Reds have been chasing the signature of the Netherlands international since last summer after he handed in a transfer request but a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach. The fee is the most ever paid for a defender. Van Dyck started his career at Groningen before moving to Celtic in 2013 where he won the Scottish Premiership title twice. Celtic will benefit from the record transfer fee as they are understood to have had a 10 per cent sell-on agreement on any future transfer. Liverpool draw Everton in FA Cup 3rd round

This will be the 23rd time Liverpool have played Everton in the FA Cup, with their last meeting coming in a semi-final win in 2012. It will be the second Merseyside derby of the season as the Reds play Everton this Sunday in the Premier League. Liverpool are currently 4th in the league following a 1–5 demolition of Brighton at the weekend. Everton are 10th, with new manager Sam Allardyce winning his first game in charge, a 2-0 victory against Huddersfield. Who can forget the eight-goal thriller between Reds and the Toffees in 1991’s FA Cup fifth-round replay, which proved to be the final match of Kenny Dalglish’s first tenure as Liverpool manager. Liverpool 3 – 0 Southampton

Jurgen Klopp made four changes to his Liverpool team with Dejan Lovren replacing the injured Joel Matip in central defence. Joe Gomez was a surprise omission but perhaps one eye was on the Champions League match against Seville in midweek. Salah opened the scoring in the 31st minute when he curled into the net from 18 yards, punishing Dusan Tadic for losing possession. The strike gave the Reds confidence and ten minutes later an exquisite Philippe Coutinho pass picked out a perfectly-timed run as Salah slotted a second past Fraser Forster in the 41st minute. It was Salah’s 14th goal in what is fast becoming a stellar debut season for the Reds. Philippe Coutinho added a third in the second half when Southampton keeper Foster could only parry a Firmino shot and the Brazilian was on han...
